Pay rise Vs New job?

Not happy in your current job role? Should you look for new opportunities now? Or should you wait for your next performance/salary review?

I’ve been speaking to many Salesforce professionals who are open to the possibility of brand new Salesforce job opportunities however, the thought of missing their next performance review and potentially, missing a salary increase seems to be a scary concept for most.

Why is that?

When I put myself in the shoes of my candidates, I can appreciate the commitment you have to complete these projects as a result of working relentlessly for months at a time. The majority of individuals expect that following the completion of their project, their line manager will provide a performance review.

In the performance review, the manager and employee discuss the impact and development of performance as well as the employee's growth and development within the business. The performance review is a great opportunity to initiate the conversation regarding a raise. However, it can be challenging to know precisely how to proceed.

Sadly, consistently good performance and hard work don't always equal a salary increase, as these decisions can be influenced by external factors, such as budgets, roadmaps, etc. You may even feel obliged to offer your current employer loyalty because they’ve been supportive of you in the past, which is always understandable but, is it worth missing out on a new Salesforce job opportunity that could see your salary increase by around £10,000 immediately?

Even if your employer agrees to your request for a salary increase, you may not be able to obtain what you are asking for. This will usually result in an ongoing discussion that consumes additional time.

In the end, your individual performance could be exceptional, but if the business overall is doing less well, it may be damaging to award a pay rise. Remember – The bottom line will always win in any salary discussion and that’s out of your hands.

But look, it's not always about money, employees can be empowered in other ways, and employers can offer incentives such as having more responsibilities, a higher job title, or participating in more projects, and this can provide the same level of satisfaction for some as a salary increase.

In the event that none of the above can be achieved, and you are stuck in a rut, what can you do?

The absence of an incentive from your employer may cause you to feel that you are not appreciated for the work you do and the value you provide to the organization.

My advice? If you decide to be brave and step away from your current job role in pursuit for a higher salary, it’s helpful to remember what the odds are - you will get what you want!

The only thing standing in your way is you! (Oh, and that eagerly awaited performance review…)
