Benefits of Flexible Working in the Salesforce World

I’ve been a digital marketer for almost 5 years now, and this is my first remote job.

I started as Marketing Manager here at Steadman Brown in February this year, after being made redundant from my previous job. I wasn’t looking for a remote role, I was mainly focusing on on-site or hybrid roles as that is what I was used to. Plus, I am a people person and do love a good chat.

But when Lewis, our director, reached out about this role and found that it would be remote, I was intrigued. A year ago, I probably would have dismissed the idea of a remote job immediately. Still, I had wanted to get back into marketing for a recruitment agency and felt that I would have been an idiot for passing it up.

But I’ve also come to see how great it is for Salesforce professionals to have the opportunity to work from home too. With thousands of professionals across the UK, flexible/remote working means there are more opportunities to find the perfect role and for Salesforce customers to find their perfect Salesforce gurus.

But what other advantages are there, and will flexible/remote working become the norm in the future?

The pros of flexible working

When COVID-19 was affecting all of us in 2020, remote working was the preferred and best way for businesses to continue operations without putting their employees out of work. It was reported that 43.1% of the population worked from home, almost half of the working population.

Although some companies have started to bring their employees back to the office full-time, others have decided to go down a different route. For example, Salesforce has adopted a flexible working approach for all their employees from hybrid to remote, with their ‘no one-size-fits-all’ approach. And since their introduction to flexible working, office attendance has risen by 40% since February 2023.

But what are the benefits of flexible working?

For Salesforce professionals

  • Commute – save time and money commuting to and from the office.
  • Work-life balance – More time in the mornings, evenings, attend classes or just more time to relax and spend with family.
  • Concentration – Some can find the office distracting with the chatter and noise, flexible work suits some more than others so they can work from home in peace.
  • Fewer expenses – Saving money on travel, fewer temptations from your favourite lunch spots, and more.
  • Visit the office/team – flexible working gives you the option to go to the office, whether it’s for a meeting or even a change of scene.
  • Work from anywhere – For example, Steadman Brown is based in Dartford, Kent. Whereas I’m based up north in St Helens.
  • More opportunities – flexibles roles offer Salesforce professionals more opportunities to find the best position for them and their careers.

For Employers

  • Easier communication –Access to platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Slack, and more makes it much easier for teams to communicate. Plus, most meetings (even for on-site employees) can be conducted online.
  • Morale – Flexible working can boost the morale of employees, as they feel that they have a little more freedom, while still focusing on their work.
  • Job satisfaction – As more look for flexible work, offering this to employees may just decrease the rate of those leaving.
  • Costs – Reduces the cost of gas and electricity, and as prices continue to increase on rent, can give employers the option to downsize.
  • Reduces staff absence – As shown by Salesforce above, flexible working can increase office attendance but also reduce sick leave due to less stress.

Will flexible working become the norm?

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the idea of remote or flexible working was in the air but it wasn’t common across the country. Just 4.7% worked remotely in 2019.

A recent study from the Institute of Directors has shown that 8 out of 10 business leaders want to offer a form of flexible working. Of course, not everyone has the option to work from home; customer-facing roles such as hospitality, healthcare, etc. require employees to be face-to-face. But office-based roles can give more flexibility.

Currently, 10% of the office workforce are remote full-time, while one in three have a form of hybrid working. Plus, it is estimated that people value the ability to work from home two or three days a week about the same as they would an 8% pay rise. As for job seekers, the demand for flexible/remote working in 2023 increased by 120%, and 59% of workers expressed a preference for fully remote work.

Flexibility in a Salesforce world

As mentioned above, there are a vast number of advantages to flexible working. And with so much now online such as Salesforce, it’s even easier to work from anywhere.

At Steadman Brown, a large majority of our active roles are either hybrid or remote. Not only is it great for us in being able to find candidates, but it’s perfect for Salesforce customers as it increases the talent pool and the opportunities to find their Salesforce professionals much quicker than if it was fully on-site.

From these recent studies and how the world has changed since 2020, it looks to be that flexible and remote working is here to stay, and potentially be the norm for generations to come.

Joby Smith

Joby Smith

I'm Joby, the newest member of Steadman Brown

I joined Steadman Brown in April 2024, having worked in the dynamic field of recruitment for nearly two years. A major career change for me, having previously worked as an electrician for 8 years. I previously worked as a 360 recruiter with an agency that specialised in education. It was here that I practised connecting talented individuals with exciting opportunities, fostering relationships, and driving positive outcomes for both clients and candidates.

We asked Joby...

What attracted you to Steadman Brown?
My first interaction with Steadman Brown was on LinkedIn, where I was introduced to Salesforce. Having worked with a different CRM system in my previous role I was intrigued to develop my understanding further, and with my skills and experience in recruitment I wanted to move into securing myself a career within the tech industry.

What attracted me to Steadman Brown was the opportunity to expand my knowledge and gain experience within a completely new industry.

How Do You Like To Spend Your Downtime?
When I’m not in the office, you’ll either find me on a golf course or at the driving range (I need all the practice I can get). I like to think I’m good at a great deal of sports-based activities but golf is one I’m still yet to perfect. But practice makes perfect, and I’m not giving up anytime soon. I’ve bought too many golf clothes now to give up.

Superpower Qualities?

I wish I could read people’s minds, I’d love to know what my mates think of my shots on the golf course.

Fav Food/Drink?
Favourite food would have to be pasta, I could eat spaghetti or lasagne everyday. And I love a good beer, cruzcampo is the winner at the moment.

Fav Film?
Favourite film would have to be Papillon, the 2017 version. After watching the film for the first time I continued to watch it for the next 3 nights in a row.

Fav Music?
I listen to a variety of music, I was always the go-to for creating playlists. But in terms of favourite, anything by Paolo Nutini.

Pet Peeve/Weakness?
My pet peeve is people who sing-along to songs but don’t get the lyrics right.

Women in Tech - A dive into the UK Workforce

Last week was International Women's Day!

This year theme (which was celebrated on March 8th) is centred around #inspireinclusion, celebrating the importance of diversity and empowerment in the everyday world. As of 2023, 51% (or 33.75 million) of the population in the UK is female, making International Women’s Day (IWD) an important celebration.

Yet when it comes to the working world, there are many sectors, businesses and positions in the UK that are still very male orientated. Many women believe that they feel misrepresented or not given the same opportunities as their male colleagues. The technology industry is a great example of this.

At Steadman Brown, we are always looking at how we can give candidates the greatest opportunities within the Salesforce market. But how do we ensure that women get the best chances in securing their dream Salesforce role and break these barriers?

Before we get into that, we want to show how the UK and Salesforce fair when it comes to equality in the tech industry, and how we intend to break these barriers.

The UK

By the end of 2023, the UK was #1 in Europe and #3 globally in the technology sector, raking in a huge $996bn (£785bn) for the economy. Tech has become a vital part to business as ROI becomes a main aspect to many companies across the country.

Yet out of the 1.7 million in the UK who work in the tech sector, only 26% (442,000) of the workforce is female. So why is this? It can be down to several factors such as:

  • Education – The Tech sector for many years has been tailored or aimed at the male population, but even with technology become a prominent aspect to everyday life, women are still less likely to choose a STEM or tech position as a career. In fact, only 30% of female students go on to study a STEM subject at university, and only 3% see it as a career.
  • The workplace – When it comes to finding the right role, it’s not just about the wage or location. 83% of women look at employers that show strong diversity, equality, and inclusion – yet 66% don’t feel the opportunities are there.
  • Gender imbalance – As of 2023, 77% of tech leaders where men – meaning that only 23% of leaders were women. Yet studies show that companies with a female lead team out-performed businesses with a male dominated team by 48%.

Salesforce

Salesforce is the largest CRM in the world, working with over 11,000 partners and 200,000 customers using the platform daily. In Salesforce itself, it has over 72,000 employees across the world and continues to grow.

But how does it look from an equality perspective? In 2022 Salesforce reported that 38% of it’s hires were women. To many that may still look to be under what would be seen as progressive, but the percentage of women in Salesforce had increased from 36% within a year. And last year they announced the goals to reach 40% of women and non- binary employees within the company by 2026.

How does Steadman Brown compare?

Of course, we’re not a CRM giant or have 1.7 million Salesforce professionals on our books, but we take pride in offering every person the best chance at securing their next Salesforce role. But how do we do this?

CVs

Not every business may realise that they are being prejudice or solely selecting male candidates without realising it. So, when we send over a CV to a client, we take out any details that could lead to this.

We have a unique tool that allows us to strip out any data that could result in our clients showing prejudice in the initial CV screening. Our tool allows our clients to review the Salesforce talent, on their skills alone, removing data indicating the candidates Gender, Race, Religion and Educational background.

Statistics

Since this tool was included in the recruitment process, we have either passed or come close to the national average in three areas for placing women, and anoverall 42% of placements through Steadman Brown have been women!

Salesforce Administrator

  • UK Average, 39%
  • SB Average, 55%

Salesforce Consultant

  • UK Average, 37%
  • SB Average, 42%

Salesforce Developer

  • UK Average, 23%
  • SB Average, 24%

Conclusion

As a country, we still have a long way to go until the tech and Salesforce sector have true equality and inclusion for women. Many employers are aware of the gender imbalance and are making sure that women have better opportunities, not just to secure a role, but to excel and become integral to the business’s future success.

Salesforce is showing strides in becoming inclusive and not just for women, but for all genders, races, and religions. At Steadman Brown, we hope to do the same and give female Salesforce professionals the confidence to apply and grow in the chosen field.
